Doctors have been working tirelessly to fight against the COVID 19 pandemic for more than a year now. Many have been pulled away from their families, hometown and existing departments to COVID teams nationwide. Majority of them are contract doctors. But what do they get in return?
No permanent position in the government service, no opportunity for advancement in their career, no job satisfaction but burnout and health deterioration?
At the same time, the Malaysian Medical Association says 'The current contract is messy, biased and a failure as it has given them uncertainty in their employment in the government service and in their future as healthcare professional.'

Recently, Malaysia has one of the worst COVID-19 infection in the world after the festive season despite implementation of Movement Control Order 3.0. Daily new confirmed COVID-19 cases has spiked exponentially, recording a new high of 7,748 cases on 26 May 2021 with a total 2,309 people succumbed to the disease as of 24 May 2021. ICU beds has stretched to 91% usage throughout the nation.

Malaysia has acquired five vaccines which are Pfizer, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Sputnik V and CanSinoBIO with Pfizer having the highest efficacy rate. The other vaccines have rather lower efficacy rates but does that mean that it is less effective in protecting one from COVID-19 infection?

Malaysia has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, consists of government-led funded-by taxpayers hospitals and private healthcare services.
However, with the introduction of contract doctor system in Dec 2016, many don’t get the permanent posts and thus not able to enter local Master programmes to become specialists. In the long run, this might worsen the ongoing issue of shortage of specialists, especially when Malaysia is heading into an ageing nation, which will result in direct pressure to the healthcare system.
